In-growing toe nails

Nails should generally be cut straight across, taking care not to leave any jagged edges which may cut the skin of the adjacent toe. Do not cut down the sides of the nail, as this may lead to it growing in. Other causes of in-growing toe nails include cutting the nail too short, wearing tight or short shoes and damaging the nail by dropping something on it/stubbing it.

The skin surrounding the nail may become very red, swollen and painful, and you may even see some pus. Do not attempt to remove the nail yourself, as you will probably make it worse. Soak your toe in a bowl of strong salty water and make an appointment as soon as you can to have it treated professionally the longer you leave it, the worse it will become.

The podiatrist can remove the offending piece of nail painlessly.
