Orthoses

An orthosis or (plural: orthoses) is a bespoke medical device that supports or corrects the function of a limb and is intended to mechanically compensate for a pathological condition by:

  • Controlling, guiding, limiting and/or immobilizing an extremity, joint or body segment for a particular reason
  • Restricting movement in a given direction
  • Assisting movement generally
  • Reducing weight bearing forces for a particular purpose
  • To otherwise correct the shape and/or function of the body, to provide easier movement capability or reduce pain

One of the most important considerations when prescribing orthoses is to ensure that they fit into your shoes! This may sound obvious, but because orthoses take up some room within the shoes, this can cause problems; we will ensure, through selecting the most appropriate materials for your orthoses to be made from, that this does not cause you problems.
